“Resolutions from the Second Mon Conference”
The Mon people have continuously demanded their rights by holding a series of conferences. The significant resolutions passed at the Second Mon Conference, held in September 1947, were as follows:
(1) To ensure that the demand for separate territories by other ethnic groups does not encroach upon Mon territories.
(2) To delegate authority to the Central Executive Committee to decide whether or not to demand a separate Mon state if the seven-point demand, submitted by a coalition of Mon organizations, is not met by the deadline of September 25, 1947.
(3) To authorize the Central Executive Committee to assess the situation and decide whether a delegation should be sent to Britain to establish international relations for the Mon people.
(4) For this conference to demand complete independence for a Mon-Burma union, rather than Dominion status.
(5) To secure representatives for the Mon people through a separate electorate and to form a ‘Mon Affairs Council’ from these elected members. If this right is not granted, the conference grants full authority to the Central Executive Committee to decide whether the Mon people should pay any taxes levied upon them.
