Formation of the Commission of Inquiry on Regional Autonomy
(History of Mon Politics)
On October 5, 1948, Thakin Nu established the Commission of Inquiry on Regional Autonomy under the government of the Union of Burma.
This commission was chaired by the Union’s Chief Justice, Agga Maha Thiri Sithu Sir Ba Oo. It included one representative from each state, along with six representatives each from the Karen, Rakhine, and Bamar ethnic groups.
The primary responsibility of this commission was to investigate the demands for regional autonomy made by the Karen, Mon, Rakhine, and other ethnic groups, and to formulate recommendations for how those aspirations could be addressed as quickly and effectively as possible.
