Following the release of a report by the State Government Advisory Council concerning the formation of Mon State, a Mon National Convention was organized under the leadership of the Mon State Formation Working Unity Committee.
The convention was held on January 8, 1961, at the Nepal National High School in the Botataung Township of Yangon.
The convention was chaired by U Maung Maung, a prominent Mon cultural leader. Attendees included members of the Sangha (monkhood), Member of Parliament Mon Phoe Cho, Nai Aung Tun, former parliamentarian Bo Hto Tun from the Pa Ma Nya Ta Party, and Thakin Lu Aye, among other notable figures, as well as Mon men and women.
Chairman U Maung Maung delivered the opening speech, and during the convention, a presentation and discussion on the formation of Mon State were also conducted.
The Mon State Formation Working Unity Committee consisted of:
• Nai Hla Maung (Chairman)
• Mon Phoe Cho (Vice Chairman)
• Nai Aung Tun (Vice Chairman)
• Nai Thein Maung (General Secretary)
• and seven other executive committee members.
